Water Polar

Frequent readers of the blog (or anybody who happened to click the link from the previous post) knows that Katie and I were zoo-bound this week to celebrate the 20th birthday of my sister.

It rained all day, but true Oregonians we are, it didn't slow us down much.

My dad's default photo expression. I call it the "Geoff, put that down" look.
But the highlight of the trip was when we got to the polar bears and found one of the big guys playing a little water polo:

This bear was ginormous. About 18 times bigger than I was and he tossed his Buik sized ball around like it was made of wiffle.

(Is that what they make wiffle balls out of? Wiffle?)

Anyway.

I learned something very important about polar bears that day:

Polar bears...
Freakin'...
LOOOOOOOOOOOVE...
Water Polo.
Like, a lot.

Badass. This picture has it.

8/52 "'Hakuna matata"

Before I even write a single sentence I have to say thanks to my brosef Branden Pursinger for taking this photo.

Happy berfday to you.
This week was my sister's 20th birthday (she's the one in the middle, in case you didn't know). As per usual on my sister's birthday we took a trip to my old work the Oregon Zoo.

Of course, being Oregon in March is poured down rain for the entire time were were there, but we managed to snap a few photos.

For those of you not familiar with the Oregon Zoo experience the three of us are hiding out in the African Savannah exhibit, and this is pretty much the only time in the zoo's history that there haven't been 400 second graders crammed into this little bubble-thing.

Oh, what's that you say? You want MOOOORE photos from previous zoo experiences?

Well:

We've got a bunch of stuff to post to the blog over the next few days, so shut up already about how irregularly we post. I'll post, like, 8 things this week to make up for it. Promise.

Maybe.

VIDEO: Zoo Lights 2010

A couple of weeks ago Katie and I went to Zoo Lights at the Oregon Zoo. A bunch of zoos across the country do something similar, but essentially they put a gazillion Christmas lights up around the zoo and you wander around after hours and enjoy.

It's something my family has always made a habit of going to every year, and Katie was always forced to sing Christmas carols at Zoo Lights in high school.

This year it was Katie's niece who was singing and we went and watched her perform. It was a fun time and I've managed over the last few weeks to string together enough time to make this: It's a short video I threw together of the performance and some lights.

Just to be clear, I didn't shoot this using my normal Nikon D60, I used this:

Also, this was taken with our super sweet new 35mm lens, but more on that later...

It's an old Canon Powershoot A710. They don't make these anymore, so the video quality isn't exactly going to be in HD, nor is the sound.

But I had fun, so suck it.

Oh, and Merry Christmas.

Maybe he had a fish in his pocket...

Went to the zoo with Katie for her birthday. It was a fun day, and you'll see more photos up on the ol' Flickr in the days to come, but I thought I'd play around with some black and whites with a few black-and-white birds.

Humboldt Pengiun (cuteus adorablenus)
This, is a Humboldt penguin. They're adorable, cuddly, and smell like rotting fish-heads.

Usually when you see these guys in the Penguinarium (yes, that's the actual term) the birds swim around in the water, but seldom "do" anything. Until today.

Yes. That is a construction worker's hard hat floating in the water. No idea why it was there, but it was. My theory is that the penguins attacked a maintenance man or something.

Needless to say, when we got there all that was left of the poor guy was this hat. And the penguins were loving it. They were all over it, jumping on it, biting it, etc.

R.I.P. generic construction worker. Your sacrifice made for a fun few minutes in the Penguinarium.

zoo trip!

Headed to the zoo for Katie's birthday, then off to her moms for a berfday party.

These were from a few zoo trips ago, but I thought I'd put them up anyway.

(In hindsight, I should have edited these... but I'm lazy. Deal with it.)

Scariest... yawn... EVER
Polly wanna closeup?
WHAZZZZUP? (sorry. we're better than that. I'll try harder next time)
